Collaboration
Zone

Boiler House

Level Two

Secondary Space

Allowing people to respond to their experience of the precinct by providing a space to connect, share and evolve their ideas as a group
mini pull up.png

The architectural language encapsulating the collaboration pods creates a focused environment for groups to collaborate, however, it does not isolate from the main library space. I specifically designed the form of these pods to continue the idea that innovative design comes from a continual sharing between all kinds of people, it does not stop after the research phase.

Collaboration zone perspective - the connection between the pods, the overall form and the overall library space

COLLABORATION TABLE

Creating a custom table item to ensure and encourage collaborative behaviour was crucial in designing my custom table. The circular form of the table allows for people to connect with people around the table with ease and the in-built custom tablet on the table's top face allows for endless amounts of drawing/writing that can be saved and exported to the visitors' email.

MY FEATURES:

Use my stylus's to draw all over me! This means you don't need to worry about leaning on my surface or ruining your drawings if you need to put something on top of me

My interface allows you to choose all different colours / pen types and line types so you can get the maximum experience out of using me

import images / documents onto the screen to draw over!

Save and export all or some of what's been drawn on the screen and email it to yourself so your work doesn't get lost!

LOOKING INTO THE DETAIL:

With ideas of push-up compartments circulating for where to store the stylus pens for the table, I found that these ideas/functions were only accessable to people who would know the space or be sitting near this sort of detail which I found ruined the fluidity of the space. That is why I designed for the stylus's to sit openly and security in a detail of the tables edge where the function of the table will become more evident and visible to new people in the space

ENGAGING WITH HERITAGE AND ACCESSABLITY

Hover over the icons below to see how I have been addressing these ideas with in my collaboration zone!
COLLAB 2 _ access.png
ACCESSABILITY:
When designing the spatial dimensions of my pods, I specifically made one of the pods wider to allow for wheelchair accessibility. I also purposely made the second pod over from the lift accessible so that a generous turning circle from the lift into the space could be achieved for seamless access into the space.
BOILER HOUSE PLANS (1,2).png

i

Zoomed in view of collaboration zone plan to evidence change in size for accessible meeting pod and relationship to lift

Note: you can see how making the first pod next to the lift accessible would require a sharp turn when coming from the lift

HOPPERS RELATIONSHIP TO THE SPACE:

In the design of this space I have converted the bottom of the hoppers into lights allow the heritage of the building to engage with the new forms rather than be ignored.

In the past they use to feed material down through their forms, but now they feed light down into the space below
