Sensory
Playground

Boiler House

Level One

Primary Space

A multi-sensory experience that encourages people to connect and experience with their surroundings through sound and light
plan pull out.png

The sensory playground aims to create a space for people to directly interact and play with their environment. By moving balls into different positions on the sequencer, different notes and sounds play in sequence. From researching and studying the existing heritage control panel on-site, the proposed designer for the sequencer board mimics its design language to celebrate the heritage of the building.

RECYCLED WOOD
TERRAZZO

MATERIAL:

Recycled wood aggregate terrazzo

SUPPLIER:

Havwoods

COLOUR:

A combination of colours through the ground floor:

Bianco Mono (London plane + white binder)

FORMAT:

Custom shape format. 6mm Terrazzo on 18mm

tongue and groove plywood (does not need grout

or terrazzo joints)

SUSTAINABILITY:

This material does not release any VOCs or formaldehyde. It is long-lasting and a durable

flooring option. Its aggregate of recycled wood also repurposes a waste material rather than sourcing

new wood

ELECTROLUMINESCENT TAPE

MATERIAL:

Electroluminescent tape to outline the interior of specified glass layers. Electroluminescent tape is durable, flexible and high quality (it even can be used in textile design).

SUPPLIER:

VynEL supplied through Elluminglow

FORMAT:

2 mm in height and 1 mm thick. The length of the product is customisable and can be cut to size. The tape will be adhered to glue to glass.

SUSTAINABILITY:

In choosing lighting, consideration in to the quality and durability of the product is considered for a more sustainable option. In addition, using products that are specifically suitable for this unusual format will mean a product that doesn't need to be replaced often.

STACKED GLASS
WALL

MATERIAL / COLOUR:

Starphire glass cut to custom shapes and adhered together by UV glue processing

SUPPLIER:

Rozelle Glass (local to site business)

SUSTAINABILITY:

Company/workshop is located in Rozelle specifically to support local business economy and reduce the transportation distance of heavy material.

Material is easily recyclable after use and is made from an abundant natural raw material

CUSTOM GRIDI BOARD STRUCTURE

MATERIAL:

Crushed mycelium mixed with organic binding materials

COLOUR:

Natural colour pigment from mycelium

FORMAT:

Pre-cast flat sheets on cast-in-situ curved panels

SUPPLIER:

Custom made on site

SUSTAINABILITY:

By using organic and natural materials to build up the components of this material, this product is very sustainable. Additionally, the material from mycelium properties, is fire resistant, durable and easy to maintain and clean.

EXISTING CONCRETE
CEILING

MATERIAL:

Existing concrete structure

FINISH:

No additional finish is to be given to this material unless for safety reasons. Dust / sharp edges to be shaved down for safety purposes.

SUSTAINABILITY:

By using existing materiality on site, it is reducing non-degradable material to go into waste and allows for the existing heritage of the building to be appreciated

EXISTING BRICK WALLS

MATERIAL:

Existing brick structure

FINISH:

No colour finished is to be used to embrace original and existing material heritage. However, builders are to shave off any sharp edges/sides for safety

SUSTAINABILITY:

By reusing a long-lasting and durable materiality in a large formate rather than ordering large amounts of a new material to create new walls / wall finished is a sustainable option and allows for the heritage of the building to be appreicated

THE GLASS WALL

In designing the exterior wall of the sensory playground, I continued the design language of my project but in a new format. Specifically in this use of stacking glass, I am trying to encourage people to rethink how materials can be used and to use this type of innovative thinking in their own way. Additionally, to create a more intimate and intriguing experience of this detail, I have etched the interior glass edges with sentences that form an acknowledgement of country and an encouragement of future, innovative design practices to celebrate inclusive behaviour of all cultures and abilities.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS AND FUTURE WAYS OF INCLUSIVITY
The following is the paragraph etched on the interior on the glass layers
It is at the forefront of innovative thinking and learning that we acknowledge the traditional owners and caretakers of our land, not just as a historical event, but as a continual inclusion of traditional custodians and their undeniably thorough and intimate knowledge of the land and built environment that we reside in. Although this building was originally a power station that supplied energy to the growing colonisation of Sydney, for thousands of years beforehand, the Wangal people took care of and are the traditional custodians of this site. For future thinkers and designers to create inclusive, connected and forward-thinking cities with strong connections to their built environment and sense of place, acknowledgment of traditional landowners in addition to all cultures and abilities needs to be addressed.

CUSTOM GRIDI BOARD

In using the system of a GRIDI board and applying it to my own custom display table, I have designed a sequencing board that allows people to experiment with sound in a collaborative environment whilst also engaging with a form that represents the existing heritage control board on site.
