Primary Space
Creating an inclusive communal environment for people to come together to meet their social needs

Located on the ground floor, the marketplace becomes a central ‘social-hub’ area for the whole site. The intent of the marketplace is to allow for all people to feel welcomed to decide how they want to socialise or retreat in this space. This is specifically achieved through my modular furniture design that allows people to configure endless table/chair configurations to suit their needs

Perspective - how the market place is experienced
DYNAMIC PENDANT DETAIL
Not only the Wangal people (the traditional owners of the WPBS site) but all Indigenous Australians, undeniably have a rich and deep understanding and respect of their land. This extends on a spiritual, cultural and physical level where the land and natural environment gives life, sustains and provides for them. It is this strong connection and relationship between Indigenous people to their environment that I want to represent in the dynamic movement of pendant lights in my marketplace.
With a series of 4 pendant lights, each light will represent a natural element of Rozelle and raise / lower in accordance with that elements natural movement/change in the environment. As shown below, each of the pendants will individually represent the seasons, tide changes, moon phases and sun movement - all elements that the Indigenous people for a long time, have had a deep understanding and connect to.

1. SEASONS (D'HARAWAL CALENDAR)
In using Sydney's Indigenous Australians knowledge and creation on their yearly seasonal calendar, I have allocated one pendant to move up and down accordingly to their different seasonal definitions as shown below. The more 'warmth' predicted during the season the lower and longer the pendant extends down

3. MOON PHASES
The Indigenous Australian communities also had a deep understanding and knowledge of the moon, especially in relation to tides and in return the effects to hunting, fishing, navigation and agricultural systems. This is why a pendant will be allocated different rising and lowering patterns according to the moon phase of that day.

4. SUN MOVEMENT
This pendant will rise and lower accordingly to the movement of the sun. This natural element is significant to the Indigenous people as it is the form thats brings life and heat to the people living under it. Below is an example of its movements during the day (but the exact movement of it each day will change slightly according to the time of sun rise / sun set changes during the year

2. TIDE CHANGES
Another pendant will be allocated to move in accordance with the change in tides of the water surrounding Rozelle. Tides play a significant role in the ability of the Indigenous people to hunt and use the water as a mode of transport. The graph line depicting the movement of the pendant through the day is a direct reflection of the tide graph for Rozelle predicted for that same day.

MODULARITY
The fluid modularity of the space creates an inclusive environment for people to feel welcomed to leave their homes and meet with friends and family in a communal environment. This environment is specifically created through the design of my modular furniture that is intended to configurated to the needs of the group (social) or individual (retreat).

THE DISPLAY TABLE
To continue the theme of this space to be modular and fluid with its use, I have designed the marketplace display table to be able to function as an informal social point, a display to sell art, a table to sell produce off or even as a passive form to act similarly as a 'half wall' to spatially differentiate its designated space next to the sensory playground.
